I started with an old Agfa 110 pocket camera as a kid, but the hobby fell by the wayside during my teenage years, except for the few drunken party snapshots. I rediscovered my affinity for photography around 2006 and bought my first DSLR in late 2009 - coinciding, not accidentally, with my first reliable income. Around the same time, a late-night, impulsive purchase of an old German Rolleicord brought me back to film. This soon spiraled into a "hoarding" craze, culminating in a collection that was as impressive as it was impractical.
My mindset shifted during a trip in to Barcelona 2011 when I forced myself to use a single camera-and-lens combination. Before that, I usually traveled heavy, equipped with at least one digital and one analog camera and a bag full of prime and zoom lenses. That trip revealed that a minimized setup - specifically a 50mm equivalent lens and one body - let me focus on the photography itself.
My gear journey has been a bit of a carousel. I replaced my first crop-sensor DSLR with a full-frame model shortly after its successor was released. I stuck with that camera until its weight became a burden, especially as traveling became my primary passion. I eventually moved to a crop mirrorless system for the sake of portability, but I found myself unhappy with the electronic viewfinder and the difficulty of using a polarizing filter. After just 16 months, I moved to a full-frame mirrorless, finding a middle ground in size, only to switch back to crop mirrorless less than two years later. And another 6 years down the line I am back to a full-frame setup.
My analog obsession began with that late-night Rolleicord III, which was soon joined by countless 35mm cameras. The fact that vintage 35mm bodies were so cheap was a double-edged sword: the low entry price was tempting, but the ongoing cost of film added up quickly. However, it taught me a valuable lesson—that while all cameras are fundamentally alike, they are also beautifully different. As I dug deeper, I found my "Goldilocks" setup in medium format: a heavy SLR workhorse for serious sessions and a versatile rangefinder for everything else, both utilizing the 6x6 format.
Regarding lenses, I’ve settled on a "normal" prime philosophy. I use a 27mm f/2.8 for the X-Pro2, a 40mm f/2 for the Nikon ZF, an 80mm f/2.8 for the Rolleiflex 6008 Professional, and a 75mm f/3.5 for the Mamiya 6. Over the years, I’ve owned more glass than I can count, but I eventually applied the same "sell-off" strategy to my lenses as I did my cameras. While I used an 85mm and 100mm for concert work, they rarely saw the light of day during travel. I eventually realized that my wide and ultra-wide lenses were just attempts to imitate styles I admired but didn't actually practice.
