Sometime back in the spring of 2010, I heard from a friend’s friend - whom I was in contact with on Flickr - that his camera equipment had met a terrible fate. It had tumbled down a flight of stairs while he was covering a concert, leaving him empty-handed for his next gig. Despite having zero experience in concert photography, I heard myself volunteering to step in as a replacement. It was a classic "fake it 'til you make it" moment.
So I wrote the organizers, scheduled everything and went to the first concert as nervous as a kid on its first school day. I was totally out of my comfort zone, feeling more like an imposter than a photographer. However, with each subsequent show, the nerves began to settle. I started to understand the dance of the stage. I started to learn to estimate the light, went from aperture-priority to full manual, and took less and less photos each concert, while getting more keepers.
Looking back, that broken camera equipment was the catalyst for a whole new chapter of my life. What started as a favor for a friend turned into a masterclass in adaptability. I didn't just learn how to take a photo; I learned how to stay calm in the middle of a crowd and find the beauty in the noise. It was, without a doubt, totally worth it.
